Visitors to both Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone National Parks always hope to come away having experienced elk in the wild. I know I always did as a kid, and now that I live in the region, I still enjoy spending time in the Park during the annual fall elk rut. The high mountain valleys, stunning in their brilliant fall colors, teem with life. Most visible are the bull elk racing and clashing, hoping to keep rivals at bay, and then racing off to re-corral their harem of cows, enticed away by another interloper's bugling calls. And in the midst of all this testosterone insanity, the elk cows, heads tipped upward, seem to dance across the valley floor like young princesses, prancing this way and that to avoid the melee and unwanted male attentions - all hallmarks of breeding season in the Rockies.

Hooray! My new painting, "Mountain Maidens", is finally finished!! Thought you might enjoy seeing the crazy process that finally got me across the finish line.
I began this piece quite some time ago, originally thinking I would do it as an acrylic-colored scratchboard. But the very factor that makes acrylic paints so attractive- ie, that they dry very fast- is the very thing that can also be so frustrating about them, as the fast drying time makes them very challenging when you want a smooth blending of colors. I was fighting with this issue, when my son, who was upgrading his ipad, asked me out of the blue if I would be interested in giving digital painting a try. I jumped at the chance to try something new, and what you see here is the distillation of those two processes. I think it was well worth the effort, and I am really glad that the beautiful experience I was trying to capture did not retire permanently to the shelf! I would love to hear what you think, so please leave me a comment!
