The Inspiration behind this Piece:

Pretty much everyone loves the curious, playful, totally exuberant antics of River Otters.  River and sea otter tanks are some of the most popular exhibits at zoos and aquariums around the world.  Their boundless happy energy, and napping heaps bring laughter and smiles to visitors’ faces.  Such exhibits give people the chance to get a glimpse into the world of this aquatic mammal.

While working for the Virginia Game Department, I got to be part of the release of a male River Otter back into the wild.  He had been slated to become part of a new zoo exhibit, but was not adapting well to captivity.  So it was decided that he should be given a 2nd chance with release back into the wilds of Appalachia, to roam the mountain streams and hopefully find his own Lady Love.  The morning was overcast and peaceful, but his joy of freedom as he swam off across the river was unmistakable.  I have wondered many times during the intervening years what became of him, and how many of his offspring still roam those waterways.  This piece was a tribute to the memory of that day, and the life and joy I wished for him.
