The Inspiration behind this Piece:

I have always been fascinated by the inventiveness of people from earlier times.  Arrowheads certainly fall under that mystique.  As a teenager, I worked with a woman whose husband hunted arrowheads, searching recently plowed Indiana farm fields after spring rains.  But I had no personal experience finding such a treasure until one trip to visit my in-laws living on a ranch in the Texas Hill Country.  My father-in-law had found a few points and many flakes while living there, and so the family went out on a treasure hunt, fanning out across the ridge and streambed, each hoping to be “the lucky one.”  I had little hope that luck would be with me, so I was just wandering, enjoying the early spring birdsong and sunshine.   I glanced down to check my footing, and couldn’t believe my eyes!  There, on the sunny limestone ledge was this amazing spear point!  That day, I was the one envied.

How I wished it could tell me the ways and beliefs of the people who lived and hunted there, the man who chose the piece of rock it would come from, where he sat to create it.  Where he hunted with it, the successes it brought him, and the story of its loss and how it came to be lying there in the spring sunshine, waiting through time for me to come upon it in my own time, bringing wonder to the day and my life.

This piece began as an experiment in watercolors, to see if I could capture the nuances of light and color, angles and shape.  In the end, it turned out to be a beautiful match.
