The Inspiration behind this Piece:

While living near California’s Monterey Bay, Brown Pelicans were once again a fairly common sight, their tight squadron formations skimming low across the crests of the waves as they moved up and down the coast.  Year-round residents of the southern 2/3 of California’s coastline, they are also found all along the Gulf Coast and as far north as North Carolina.  Unlike the American White Pelican, found in both fresh and salt water, which feeds as a group, slowly moving along and herding fish into schools for scooping up, the Brown Pelican plunge dives, dropping from 60’ up, headfirst into the ocean after its dinner!  Definitely a very different fishing technique!

After the scare of near extinction as a direct result of the pesticide DDT thinning eggshells, it is a wondrous sight to see them once again in good numbers, plying their way up and down our coastlines.

At their leisure, pelicans like to make use of quiet sandy beaches, docks, and rocky outcroppings to rest, socialize, and preen.  I spent one warm winter afternoon enjoying this peaceful fellow perched on some jetty rocks near Sarasota, Florida, obviously contemplating just where he should go for dinner!
