The Inspiration behind this Piece:

We had a colony of Acorn Woodpeckers that lived nearby during our California years.  Their cheerful faces always made me smile as they went about the industrious job of storing as many acorns as they could acquire in every nook, cranny, and woodpecker-made hole of their numerous dead tree snags.  A larder of this size meant an considerable investment  of valuable time and energy went into creating this cache, and the territory must be constantly guarded from intruders.  Such was the moment I worked to capture with this painting. We had a colony of Acorn Woodpeckers that lived nearby during our California years.  Their cheerful faces always made me smile as they went about the industrious job of storing as many acorns as they could acquire in every nook, cranny, and woodpecker-made hole of their numerous dead tree snags.  A larder of this size meant a considerable investment of valuable time and energy went into creating this cache, and the territory must be constantly guarded from intruders.  Such was the moment I worked to capture with this painting.
