The Inspiration behind this Piece:

Rattlesnakes are truly fascinating creatures.  Most recently evolved of the world’s snakes, they come only from the western hemisphere (mainly North America).  While designing this piece, I remembered a past mentor telling me, “Anything you can draw, a snake can do.”  Direct observation continues to prove this true.  They can do everything but back up, so always give them plenty of room to move away from you!

Originally commissioned for The Wildlife Experience Museum, in Parker (Denver), Colorado (now part of UC Denver South), this sculpture began life as an original wood carving done in tupelo wood.  It was then produced as a bronze for The Wildlife Experience Museum. Despite their extensive bronze collection, I was, at the time, the ONLY artist ever commissioned to do sculpture specifically for them. Placed on their outdoor Sculpture Walk, I was honored to have been chosen to create this sculpture.

The 2nd casting of the edition was purchased by Na 'Āina Kai Sculpture/Botanical Gardens, Kauai, Hawaii, as part of their Native American Navajo Village, and was placed on their large red-rock escarpment.  (This was their first purchase of my work.  Commissioned sculptures NAK containing 12 individuals of 7 different species later followed!)

"Space Invasion" quickly juried into two prestigious exclusive U.S./Canadian wildlife art shows: the 2009 Society of Animal Artists "Small Works Show", held at The Wildlife Experience Museum in Parker (Denver), Colorado, and the 2010 Artists For Conservation Foundation's annual show, "The Art of Conservation, Vancouver, British Columbia.  (Show lives are short, only being eligible for entry to shows for 2-3 years after creation.)
