The Inspiration behind this Piece:

This bronze sculpture, originally created in sculpting wax, began from photography trips into the Everglades of south Florida.  Larger alligators are often easily visible, but getting a glimpse of a baby is a somewhat rare occurrence, and always a treat.

American Alligator Information:

The American Alligator really is a fascinating animal.  Building nests of mud and vegetation, mother alligators lay 20-50 eggs in late June, and staunchly defend their nests throughout the 65 day incubation period.  (Raccoons are notorious nest raiders.)

Boy or Girl?  That is determined by egg location within the nest!  As plant matter decomposes, it creates heat.  Warmth of 90°-93° produces males, and 82°-86° produces females!  Therefore, the different areas of the nest create different genders.

The squeaking sounds babies make at hatching gets momma's attention, and signals nest mates to hatch together.  Hearing her babies, the mother gently digs open the nest, lifting any unhatched eggs into her mouth.  She gently rolls them against the roof of her mouth with her tongue, cracking the eggs and helping the babies escape their shells.   Scooping up her newborns with her mouth, she carries them down to the water.

Hatchling alligators (only 6”-8”), are food for raccoons, snakes, herons, egrets, otters, osprey, large fish - even other alligators!  With unparalleled behavior for the reptile world, their momma will work to protect them for 1-2 years!  (When traveling in alligator country, never approach baby alligators.  Even if you can't see her, you can bet that the mother is close by and watching you!)
