The Inspiration behind this Piece:

Several winter trips to the land of the Saguaro in the Tucson, Arizona area brought many delightful days watching the comings and goings of desert denizens from former woodpecker holes in these tall giants.

One of the planet’s harshest environments, the Sonoran Desert hosts a wealth of creatures, each uniquely adapted to cope with desert conditions.  This screech owl is one of many desert denizens who utilize the “boots” of saguaro cactus to nest and raise young, and escape the extreme heat/cold of the desert.  Escaping the desert heat, this life size fellow has found a cool retreat inside a saguaro boot, where he can sit in the shade, and watch the world go by.

The "boot" is a hard protective shell of bark-like tough scar tissue, formed in response to desert woodpeckers (Gila Woodpeckers, Gilded Flickers) excavating their nesting cavities.  The hard shell forms to protect the cactus from disease and moisture loss.  Through the years, many creatures will take advantage of these barbed fortress homes, including screech and elf owls, kestrels, finches, sparrows, purple martins, flycatchers, and wrens.

Found only in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona and western Sonora, Mexico, the slow growing Saguaro can live 150-200 years and grow 40-60 feet tall.  When the desert experiences good rainfall, these giants can weigh 3,200-4,800 lbs!

Wallhanging, weight 29 lbs (perfect for wall, patio, or fence).
